Summer Literacy
& Leadership Program
Adventure, Risk,
& Challenge
This
was our
first program to offer actual high school credits toward graduation!
TAO Education provided the support to start the Summer Leadership &
Literacy Program. We took 10 English Language Learners,
graduated 9th graders from the Truckee-Tahoe Unified School District,
on
a 6-week adventure. Students participated in Language Arts and
Environmental
Studies curriculum, as well as wilderness activities such as
backpacking,
camping, sea-kayaking on Lake Tahoe, rock-climbing and many other
adventures.
Students also participated in service projects with the Boys &
Girls
Club in Kings Beach, Teichert Aggregages, and the Forest Service.
Since its launch under TAO Education's umbrella, the ARC program has
moved
and expanded under UC Berkeley and now operates at two different field
research stations in Northern and Southern California. We are
very proud to have allowed this amazing program to start, and we
encourage similar, collaborative projects to come under our corporate
umbrella. Please contact us with any ideas you have!

OUR
EDUCATIONAL THEMES:
Our
Educational Theme for this
course was ARC (Adventure, Risk & Challenge), and our organizing
focus was to discover, confront and master adventures, risks and
challenges in the
wilderness, in our lives and in our literacy and academic skills.
OUR GOALS:
Our
goals were to help empower our students in their reading and writing
skills, to raise their grade level performance, to prepare them for the
High School Exit Exam in California, and to give them the confidence to
pursue their dreams of graduating from high school and going to
college. Our goal is also to train ten young community leaders,
students who can
serve as role models and mentors in the ELL community. Our long term
goal
is to majorly impact the entire ELL community in the Truckee- Tahoe
region,
by offering students the chance to participate in our
program.
OUR CURRICULUM:
Our
curriculum combined outdoor leadership education with structured
academic classes. Our daily
schedule was a combination of field days and base-camp "school" days.
Students completed three polished writing assignments, gave a public
reading of their work, created an interpretive natural history trail,
and taught younger students from the Boys and Girls Club in Kings
Beach. We also participated in various Environmental Service
projects as
well as a wilderness medicine curriculum. Students earned up to
10 high school credits for completion with excellence.
OUR SUPPORTERS:
The
Truckee Tahoe School Distrcit supported us with both district summer
school money, as well as Title 1 funds.
East West Partners was one of our major sponsors
Truckee Rotary gave us scholarship money support
Blase Design in Truckee donated graphic design work and
materials.
Thank you to all of our sponsors!

Here is a
testimonial from a former student who has spent months out camping with
the President of TAO Education and his school outdoor education
programs:
" Like most
students, my education at UHS is how I spend these four years, not
simply what I learn in the classroom. I think I've found a place for
myself here through Outdoor Education, as well as finding some clues
about the direction of my life. Through my experiences, I've found the
wilderness makes sense to me. It helps keep me from running around with
my nose on the ground and worrying that my life is all studying and no
fun.
The outdoors makes
me happy; it makes me tick to walk among the dirt and the trees. I give
my life to things I learn from, and the outdoors has much to teach
about skills, looking after other people, and the beauty of the world
surrounding me.
Outdoor Ed. makes
it easy for students to take some responsibility, and in the outdoors
the benefits of your preparation are obvious. It takes organization to
pull off every trip and there
is plenty of opportunity for kids to help out. Outdoor
Ed. is a great relief from the city, the little ten-mile
radius it's so easy to self destruct within.
Getting involved
is as simple as signing up for a trip; there are plenty of ways to make
it a part of your life. There are no grades, and it's alright to make
mistakes. I think that is as much of learning as studying all night for
a
test is.
Derek Larson has
invested a lot of time and thought in the program and inspired that
same caring in the students who will carry it on. I am grateful for the
chance Outdoor Ed. has given me to explore the world a little, and to
live the
way I want to live. "
