Here is a
testimonial from a former student who has spent months out camping with
the President of TAO Education and his school outdoor education
programs:
" Like most
students, my education at UHS is how I spend these four years, not
simply what I learn in the classroom. I think I've found a place for
myself here through Outdoor Education, as well as finding some clues
about the direction of my life. Through my experiences, I've found the
wilderness makes sense to me. It helps keep me from running around with
my nose on the ground and worrying that my life is all studying and no
fun.
The outdoors makes
me happy; it makes me tick to walk among the dirt and the trees. I give
my life to things I learn from, and the outdoors has much to teach
about skills, looking after other people, and the beauty of the world
surrounding me.
Outdoor Ed. makes
it easy for students to take some responsibility, and in the outdoors
the benefits of your preparation are obvious. It takes organization to
pull off every trip and there
is plenty of opportunity for kids to help out. Outdoor
Ed. is a great relief from the city, the little ten-mile
radius it's so easy to self destruct within.
Getting involved
is as simple as signing up for a trip; there are plenty of ways to make
it a part of your life. There are no grades, and it's alright to make
mistakes. I think that is as much of learning as studying all night for
a test is.
Derek Larson has
invested a lot of time and thought in the program and inspired that
same caring in the students who will carry it on. I am grateful for the
chance Outdoor Ed. has given me to explore the world a little, and to
live the way
I want to live. "
